  SatNav-Discounts Tablet PC Questions

Q: How do I use my tablet as a sat nav?
A: Most tablet PCs contain the hardware necessary to make a great sat nav, i.e. large clear screen, audio output, and inbuilt GPS (so they can receive satellite signals), Some even contain better hardware than dedicated sat nav devices, such as a digital compass. All you need to add is some suitable software, on a tablet this will come in the form of a 'GPS App'.

Q: What GPS apps can I use?
A: There's several apps out there, some are free and some cost a fair amount of cash. Google mobile is now offering full turn-by-turn directions (the same as dedicated sat navs) and is free to install, but the downside is that maps are only downloaded as and when needed. This means that you will require a 3G signal wherever you travel, which is okay for city navigation but a bit of a disaster if navigating through the countryside! A better option is the popular Co-Pilot software which costs £19.99 to download and stores maps on the tablet, meaning that a constant connection is no longer required. If you want premium navigation software then you can also install apps from TomTom and Garmin (around £40).

  Q: What is A-GPS?
A: Assisted GPS is found on high-end sat navs and some tablets, and basically allows satellite signals to be found more quickly. This improves startup time, and can also help continuous navigation when under tunnels etc.

Q: Why would I need my tablet to have a compass?
A: A digital compass means that the tablet knows which way you're facing. i.e. If you stand still and rotate, the map will rotate with you.

Q: Do I need a 3G connection to use GPS on my tablet?
A: It depends on the app you're using. If you're running an app from TomTom, Garmin, or Co-Pilot then no internet connection is required. If you're using Google maps navigation then you'll need to be connected by 3G for the entire route. To use premium services such as live traffic, you will always need a 3G connection.
